| Abstract |
Chandrayaan-1 is India's first mission to the moon, designed and developed by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization), Bangalore, India. This science mission represents a new dimension and a true challenge in the Indian Space Program. In Hindi, the term chandra = moon, yaan= ship (a litteral translation is MoonCraft). Major science mission objectives are:
To provide high-resolution mineralogical and chemical imaging of the global surface of the moon, with stereographic coverage of most of the moon's surface with 5 m resolution, to provide new insights in understanding the moon's origin and evolution
To search for surface or sub-surface water-ice, especially at the lunar poles and study of permanently shadowed north and south polar regions
To identify chemical end members of lunar highland rocks
To observe the X-ray (and ã-ray) spectrum in the energy region of 10-200 keV to provide information on lunar volatiles. |
