A survey of the current topographic maps at the scale 1:100,000 from all member states of the European Space Agency in 1985 showed that the average age was 12 years, that the relief presentation in many cases was relatively poor and that they contained little information on land use. The Alban Hills, situated about 20 km south-east of Rome served as a test site to demonstrate how digital terrain data, spaceborne remote sensing data and conventional cartographic data can be integrated in order to extend the current map contents and to expedite intermediate map revision. |
