| Abstract |
EON2000 will provide governments and environmental organisations throughout Europe with a solution to fulfil their Natura 2000 obligations under the European Commission's Habitats Directive, via the WWW. Natura 2000 calls for EU Member States to conserve precious natural resources through habitat surveillance, evaluation and conservation. The EON2000 system facilitates the use of Earth Observation images and GIS techniques to monitor the environment. By registering on the system, customers can: ? Exchange information on habitat monitoring requirements with other organisations ? Gain access to Earth Observation products to meet their legal environmental monitoring obligations, to target scarce resources and to respond to environmental change ? View the latest research work being done in this area. Initially, the project has concentrated on forest habitat monitoring. Test sites for various forest habitats have been selected with areas of Caledonian Forest for Scotland, Coniferous Forest for Austria and Boreal Forest for Finland. In this final year of the project, the results will be disseminated to a wider audience to encompass other habitat types and customers in other countries. For the latest details on the EON2000 project, please see our news page and register as a user of the EON system via the EON2000 home page http://geospace.co.at/EON2000.html
