Abstract The Very Near Infrared Radiometer (VNIR) is one of the instruments aboard the Japanese Earth Resources Satellite-1 (JERS-1) (more info here). The main purpose of the JERS-1 development was to explore earth resources with a synthetic aperture radar and optical sensors. It obtained data useful for earth observation to contribute to land survey, agriculture and forestry, fishery environmental protection, disaster prevention and coastal monitoring. VNIR imagery is useful for the identification of stone, rock and minerals.
