The Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) (more info here) is one of the instruments aboard the Terra (more info here) and Aqua satellites. The objective of MODIS is to provide long-term observations to improve understanding of global dynamics and processes occuring on the surface of the Earth and in the lower atmosphere. The scientific goals of the MODIS are: * determine surface temperature at 1-km resolution, day and night, with an absolute accuracy of 0.2 K for ocean and 1 K for land * obtain ocean color (ocean-leaving spectral radiance) from 415 to 653 nm * determine chlorophyll fluoresence within 50% at surface water concentrations of 0.5 mg per cubic meter of chlorophyll a * obtain chlorophyll a concentrations within 35% * obtain information on vegetation and land surface properties, land cover type, vegetation indicies, and snow cover and snow reflectance * obtain cloud cover with 500-m resolution by day and 1000-m resolution at night * obtain cloud properties * obtain aerosol properties * determine information on biomass burning * obtain global distribution of atmospheric stability and total precipitable water
