| Abstract |
The work forms part of the Preventative Forest Management Plan of the Community of Valencia. The main aim is to classify forest ecosystems (over 1Mha) in order to establish a system of priorities for forest fire prevention. Users are the Ministry of Environment and regional administrations in charge of forest management and fire protection.
Landsat TM images are input into supervised classification and visual photointerpretation. The data are merged with GPS data, fire statistics and digital elevation models. The outcome are vegetation maps in 1:50 000 and forest fire probability charts. The results serve as a baseline product for decision-makers. EO has led to a decrease in the cost of computing the total burned area.
