Abstract The aim of the Mekong WSC Project is the following:

1.the classification of the topographical erosion risks in the lower Mekong Basin

2.training of local project collaborators in the field of watershed management, soil erosion risk assessment, and GIS techniques

The approach used for deriving the erosion risk maps (the so called watershed classification maps, short WSC maps) is based on a DTM from which the information needed can automatically be calculated. The area covered is approx. 400'000 km2 within Lao P.D.R., Cambodia and Vietnam. The DTMs are based on 1.50'000 or 1:100'000 topographical maps. A Finnish counterpart has fairdrawn and vectorized the contour and river network information in Vientiane, capital of Lao P.D.R. Further processing, i.e., correction of data, building up of DTMs, deriving relevant layers for WS classification, printing the final maps, is done in Bern on IBM Workstations.
