Abstract The Mesoscale Alpine Programme (MAP) is an international research initiative devoted to the study of atmospheric and hydrological processes over mountainous terrain. It aims towards expanding our knowledge of weather and climate over complex topography, and thereby to improve current forecasting capabilities. A large-scale field phase in the Alpine region is planned for autumn 1999.

This programme is designed as a cooperative international undertaking and aims at resolving some of the most outstanding scientific and practical problems in the realm of weather and climate in mountainous regions. To this end MAP includes numerous activities, ranging from high-resolution numerical modelling to a major field campaign in the Alpine area.

Scientists from 12 national weather services (Austria, Croatia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, USA) as well as from WMO and ECMWF.
