Abstract The ERS-1 system offered limited possibilities to perform interferometric analyses within the ASF station mask. Software to support interferometric analysis was developed, however, and applied to investigations of sea ice deformation and the Bering Glacier's surge. This image illustrates an application of the interferometric technique; the image was used to analyze the fast ice motion near Point Barrow (the Beaufort Sea's coastline). The changes which occurred during the three-day interval between ERS-1 data-takes indicate that there has been subsidence and cracking of the fast-moving ice, likely related to winter tides and pack ice motion.
