| Abstract |
The aim of the work was to delimit ecosystems within urban areas (>100.000 inhabitants) in order to better take environmental considerations into account in urban planning, in the context of policies for sustainable development. The work was carried out at 1:25.000 scale in the agglomerations of Montbeliard, Nancy, Le Havre, Nantes, Limoges, St. Etienne, Mulhouse, Dunkerque and Perpigan. The work was designed for the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Public Works and the Agency for the Environment and Urban areas.
SPOT XS and P data were combined with Landsat TM data, digital elevation models, aerial photos and ground data. The data were integrated in a GIS to produce maps and statistics for policy makers.
The cost amounted to 180.000 to 200.000FF per agglomeration. Duration of work took between 4 to 12 months. Around 35 - 40% of this sum would be needed to update the GIS data every 3 to 5 years. The results were quickly adapted and used by the respective development authorities.
