| Abstract |
TRMM is the first mission to measure precipitation quantitatively from space. The three major sensors aboard this spacecraft, Precipitation Radar (PR), TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) , and the Visible Infrared Scanner (VIRS) are designed to obtain rainfall and other relevant information (e.g. rain type, height of the bright band, cloud type, cloud top height) individually. These three sensors are also uniquely designed to complement each other in coverage, wavelengths, and resolving capability. This combination is expected to provide more accurate rainfall rate and improved sampling capability.
