Monitoring and Prediction of the Atmospheric Transport and Deposition of Desert Dust in the Mediterranean Region

Monitoring and Prediction of the Atmospheric Transport and Deposition of Desert Dust in the Mediterranean Region

Description:
The overall objective of the proposed project is to develop and implement a prototype system for routine monitoring and prediction of the atmospheric transport of desert dust in the Mediterranean region, based on a numerical weather prediction model enhanced by a module for the simulation of the dust uptake, transport and wet and dry deposition. The dust simulations will be validated and further enhanced by means of an extensive measurement programme as detailed below. The dust monitoring and prediction system will be used both for the simulation of past events and episodes and for experimental forecasts of the atmospheric transport and deposition of desert dust in the Mediterranean region.

These regional forecasts will be for typically 2-3 days ahead. In addition to forming the basis for desert dust alerts, these forecasts will be made available to interested agencies and scientists. The proposed partners are: Mediterranean Research Centre, Erice (Italy), Division of Environmental and Analytical Chemistry, University of Heraklion (Greece), Centre des Faibles Radioactivites, Institut Pierre Siuon Laplace, Gif-sur-Yvette (France), Laboratoire de Modelisation du Climat et de l'Environnement, Institut Pierre Simon Laplace, CEA, GifSur-Yvette (France), Department of Applied Physics, University of Athens (Greece), and Laboratoire Interuniversitaire des Systemes Atmospheriques CNRS - Univ. Paris VII & Paris XII Creteil (France) - associated partner.

The scientists involved have the complementary expertise in geochemistry and ground observations, surface and space remote sensing, and meteorology and numerical modelling, necessary to accomplish the objective. The proposed Project Coordinator is Dr. J.K. Daniel Soderman of MRC Erice, formerly Head of Operations and Deputy Director of the European Centre for MediumRange Weather Forecasts.

The proposed project will result in improved environmental monitoring in the Mediterranean area. It is an innovative effort to coordinate multidisciplinary contributions of several European groups with different backgrounds and from Mediterranean countries, in order to develop an integrated system capable of measuring and modelling under operational conditions the pollution of the Mediterranean atmosphere due to desert dust. The project will be cost-efficient because it is based on the enhancement of existing satellite and numerical weather prediction facilities and because most of the necessary computer, analytical, and observational infrastructure is available.
