The Global Land Cover Test Sites (GLCTS) project is developing a multitemporal dataset of satellite imagery for
a globally distributed set of test sites. This dataset will provide a resource for research on land cover
characterization and the testing of algorithms for NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS). The selected test
sites will represent a wide range of land cover types and will be well characterized on the ground, have ongoing
field-based observation programs, and of be interest to the international global change research community.
GLCTS development is being coordinated with a number of affiliated organizations (see other WWW links below).
It is currently proposed that between 40 to 80 sites be developed for broad land cover representation. The
initial site selection process has identified a set of established and emerging long-term monitoring sites where
there is in-situ expertise and infrastructure to facilitate research. Candidate sites under consideration are
displayed on the map below.
