Olympics 2012

The 2012 Olympic games took place in London, between 27 July and 12 August and so we took the opportunity to feature related imagery during the events.

While the games have now finished, ESA managed to capture a view of the site shortly before it ended. This black and white image was captured by the High Resolution Camera aboard PROBA-1 on 11 August.

Back to views of the Olympic Park under development, with this image from GeoEye. Acquired on 25 May 2012 by the GeoEye-1 satellite, the image shows the finishing touches being made to the stadium and other venues.

NASA took a unique look at the Olympic location, in this night-time image from the Suomi NPP satellite, acquired on 27 March 2012.

This image highlights the locations of Olympic events in and around the bright centre of London, in southern England.

Seen from the high resolution WorldView-2 satellite, this image shows the Olympic Park on 23 July, just days before the Games began.

The red object visible next to the stadium is the ArcelorMittal Orbit, a sculpture created especially for the games. It is the largest piece of art in Britain, and also serves as an observation tower.

Construction of the Olympic Park officially begain in 2008, but preparations and development of the site took place several years before. The centre of the Park is located in Stratford, in the Newham borough of London.
