Minimize Arena Amazônia, Manaus

This Pleiades image, acquired 08 May 2014, shows the Arena Amazônia football stadium in Manaus, Brazil.

This stadium was constructed for the 2014 World Cup and replaced the old Vivaldão stadium which was open from 1970 to 2010. Construction of the new stadium began in 2011 and it was opened in March 2014. It is capable of hosting approximately 45,000 people. It was designed to look like a type of basket that indigenous tribes in the area weaved.

The stadium is located in Manaus, in northern Brazil, and the city is situated in the Amazon Rainforest. The Negro and Solimões Rivers meet in Manaus, where they join the Amazon River, and this makes the city a popular destination for tourists and scientists who wish to see the river and rainforest. Due to its location, most travellers to the city arrive by boat or plane, as the rainforest makes it difficult to travel to the city by road. The city has an estimated population of two million people.
