Meteorite hole in the frozen surface of Lake Chebarkul, Russia
This Pleiades image was acquired on 22 February 2013, and shows Lake Chebarkul in Russia. The lake is located next to the city of the same name, and was the site of a meteorite impact on 15 February.
This image shows the impact site in the frozen lake, though there is some question as to whether this hole was caused by the meteorite. Fragments from the meteorite have been found scattered around the lake.
The meteor caused a 500 kiloton explosion when it entered Earth's atmosphere, and the resulting shockwaves caused damage to buildings in the area as the disintegrating meteorite descended. This mostly consisted of broken windows, which lead to over a thousand injuries. The damage has since been repaired.
