Minimize Port Vila, Vanuatu, after Cyclone Pam

This Pleiades image shows the capital of Vanuatu, Port Vila, after Cyclone Pam struck the island nation on 13 March 2015. This image was acquired on 16 March, and shows the aftermath of the devastating storm.

Cyclone Pam passed over Vanuatu as a Category Five storm, which is the most powerful storm on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. It is estimated that the storm affected almost 200,000 people, and is the worst disaster Vanuatu has ever faced.

11 people have been reported killed, and damage assessments have revealed major damage to the islands in the Vanuatu archipelago. Some islands have suffered almost total destruction of buildings, and the capital city reportedly lost 90% of its infrastructure. Relief aircraft have returned photographs of other islands stripped of all vegetation by the storm's powerful winds.

Vanuatu is very dependent on its agriculture, and many crops in the nation have been destroyed. The country is expected to experience a difficult recovery from this disaster.
