Minimize The Pearl-Qatar in Doha, Qatar

The Pearl-Qatar, an artificial island under construction off the coast of Doha, Qatar, is featured in this Pleiades image, acquired on 5 February 2013.

The Pearl has been created through the use of land reclamation, and the result is an artificial island that is almost four million square metres in size.

It is intended to serve as a residential estate for both the people of Qatar and interested foreign nationals. The first people to live on the island took up residence in 2009, and as of 2015 12,000 people are living there. Development of the Pearl, which is intended to consist of more than 13 islands, is still underway but once it is completed, it is expected to be home to 45,000 residents.

The island is situated just off the coast of the capital city of Qatar, Doha, and is connected by a bridge to the city. It is constructed on what was once an important pearl diving site in Qatar, from which the project gained its name. Once the Pearl is completed it is intended to take the shape of a string of pearls.
